VISITING THE WORLD EXHIBITION IN SHANGHAI
On this trip you will visit two of the most dynamic cities in China, from the standpoint of local architects. By means of selected examples you receive an impression of the building culture of the past 200 years. You will witness the actual infrastructural development and be provided information on the plans for the urban future. The excursion to the garden city of Suzhou and the visit to the World Exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai are further highlights of this singular itinerary.
Travel Programme:
Day 1
Evening non-stop SWISS flight from Zurich to Hong Kong.
Day 2
Afternoon arrival. Transfer to Hotel Conrad Hong Kong on Hong Kong Island.
Day 3
Morning guided walk through Central Hong Kong, accompanied by a local architect. In addition to buildings from the colonial period you will visit the Bank of China building, by architect Ieoh Ming Pei, the high-rise AIG building, designed by the American architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as well as the exhibition gallery of the municipal authority for Planning and Infrastructure. In the afternoon, visit to Victoria Peak and Kowloon.
Day 4
Excursion by boat to Lantau, where the monastery Po Linh is visited. After returning to Hong Kong, time at your disposal.
Day 5
Morning at leisure. Afternoon flight to Shanghai. You will reach the city by world’s fastest Maglev (magnetic levitation) train. Bus transfer to the Hotel Swissôtel Grand Shanghai.
Day 6
City tour guided by a local expert: from the Bund and the Pudong skyline through a former British concession area with wealthy commercial buildings to the People’s Square. Visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, stage for academic exchange between local and foreign experts. In the afternoon you will visit further architectural highlights from Art Deco to the booming years this century.
Day 7
Day tour to Suzhou, one of the most beautiful Garden cities of China, built on both sides of the Grand Imperial canal, a UNESCO World heritage site with a wealth of historical buildings. Visit of two of the most outstanding gardens: Wangshi Yuan and Zhuozhengyuan.
Day 8
Visit the World Exhibition EXPO 2010 SHANGHAI with an expert local architect. You will see outstanding architectural works, such as the Chinese Pavilion, the EXPO Boulevard as well as a selection of the most interesting exhibits.
Day 9
Day at your disposal. Possibility for an individual second visit to the EXPO 2010 SHANGHAI.
Day 10
Return flight with SWISS from Shanghai to Zurich, arrival in the afternoon.
